Erta Ale or Ert Ale is a continuously active basaltic shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia, the most active volcano in Ethiopia. It is in the Afar Depression, a badlandish desert area spanning the border with Eritrea, and the volcano itself is surrounded completely by an area below sea level, making it one of the lowest volcanoes in the world (wikipedia).
We undertook in June 2010 with a group of six people and three cars an excursion to the Danakil Depression or desert. Our aim was to visit the lava lake of Erta Ale. Although we read that this excursion should be seen as a full expedition, we we underestimated the danger. The aim of this page to inform interested travelers. Our first advice for these travelers would be: do not go! Probably this will not convince you so we prefer to give you some practical information about our trip to Erta Ale.
